GW Models for a change.

Well I finally got to working on some 40k models for a friend.

I had been putting these off for a while, but today inspiration struck. I wanted something flashy that will work well in contrast. These are undercoated in an almost neon green bordering on yellow. I am using a kinda modified hairspray technique to get a crackled paint look. I am really digging the purple and green together.

This one should get pretty interesting. I am thinking that any silvers will have to be very very dark, almost like the dark bluing you would see on real rifles. And for the golds I will be using Vallejo Red gold to give it a good dark look. Stay tuned this one is gonna be fun.

  1. Fltmedic,

Just wanted to chime in and say been following your blog for quite a few months now and love your work! Looking forward to what you do with this beast. I got back in to model building over a year ago and found you while researching resources on airbrushing. Do you do everything via airbrush or do you need to do some work with regular brush? Just curious. Either way very inspirational. Keep up the great work!

  2. TNH,

Thank you for the kinda words.

As to your question, No, airbrushing is maybe 20-30% of the work on most models. (tanks and larger models are a bit different and its probably about 60% of it on them).
    .
It is a huge time saver and there are some really nifty tricks like ink blending, and pre-highlighting that are just a lot easier with the airbrush. It's also really nice to be able to prime or varnish a model whenever I feel like it.

Did you get your airbrush setup? How are you liking it if you did?

  3. I started out with a Paasche as that's what I had years ago. One of the guys in my club who's a fantastic painter MADE me get an Iwata. Best money I've spent in the hobby. There are fancier brushes but Iwata makes a great airbrush. Very consistent. I have multiple projects going right now but really having fun building and it's a great stress relief when I find the time.

  4. Iwata makes great brushes, and they're parts are sold at Hobby Lobby which is convenient.

I got lucky and got my Badger Patriot 105 for under $70 on sale, and my Khrome was $80 at Adepticon.

  5. That's a good point about Iwata and Hobby Lobby. I forget about that. Thx! The one or two stores in the area aren't overly convenient but if strategic, I can make a trip.

I got my Iwata at the local hobby shop for $89 on sale. Great deal like you. I'll keep the Paasche for throwing Future on. Figure it's ok for for that or as a backup.

The guy that put toward the Iwata paints with a broken o-ring in his. So no air regulation, just throws air. Learned to deal with it cuz he's "cheap." Hahaha. Still amazing work. Kills me.
